Keeping Active

As you’d expect from a Garden City built on the foundations of good health and fitness, Letchworth Garden City is big on green spaces, sport and recreation, and the outdoor life in general.

Discover the pleasures of walking the Greenway – a signposted 13.6 mile circular trail around the outskirts of town taking in Radwell Meadows, Willian Arboretum and Standalone Farm. Spot Letchworth’s famous black squirrel, symbol of the town, in Norton Common among 63 acres of unspoilt grass and woodland.

Take a breather in Broadway Gardens with its spacious lawns and flower beds and iconic water fountain, and visit Howard Park and Gardens, where a children’s play corner is the latest addition to a tranquil area graced by lawns, mature trees and the exquisite bowling green that is home to Howard Park Bowling Club.

For the sports-minded, Letchworth Garden City Leisure Centre offers great all-year indoor swimming, while Norton Common’s 1930s-built outdoor pool is a magnet for families during the summer months. You can even learn to scuba dive at one of the region’s leading training centres.

Tennis courts, playing fields and parks make the town a true hub of sporting activity – a fact also reflected in the town centre presence of retailers specialising in sportswear, outdoor gear and everything for the simmer, runner and cyclist. With a flourishing angling association and one of Hertfordshire’s few suppliers of air rifles, shotguns and accessories, Letchworth Garden City truly covers the whole gamut of outdoor pursuits.
