New Planters Bring a Blooming Touch to Letchworth Garden City Station

Letchworth Garden City, the world’s first garden city, is celebrating a vibrant addition to its railway station with the installation of beautiful new planters on platforms 1 and 2. Designed and built by local businessmen Sean Wilson (Sean Wilson Gardens) and Stanley Baker (Nature Boy Garden Services), these planters are part of a community-driven effort to enhance the station’s charm and celebrate the town’s horticultural heritage with funding provided by GTR, Letchworth Garden City Heritage and local business Peter Wright Electrical Services. All waste was kindly removed by local business Clean Kept Yard and recycled and wheelbarrows loaned by Standalone Farm.

The project was brought to life over a week of building, filling and planting, with one particular volunteer day which saw enthusiastic local residents alongside Love Letchworth come together to move 10 tons of soil onto the platforms before planting an array of shrubs and bulbs. These plantings promise to deliver bursts of colour throughout the changing seasons, creating a welcoming and picturesque environment for commuters and visitors alike.

This initiative is particularly timely as 2025 marks 200 years of the railway, an anniversary that underscores the rich history of Letchworth’s connection to Britain’s transport network. The addition of the planters not only honours this legacy but also reinforces the town’s commitment to community and sustainability.

A spokesperson for Love Letchworth said:

“We’re thrilled to see such a wonderful collaboration between local talent and community volunteers. The planters are a fantastic example of how small, thoughtful projects can make a big difference in celebrating our heritage and enhancing our public spaces.”

Sean and Stanley, the talented craftsmen behind the planters, expressed their delight in contributing to the station’s transformation. “It’s been great to work with Stanley and Love Letchworth on a project that so many people will be able to enjoy for years to come,” said Sean.

Visitors to Letchworth Garden City train station are encouraged to take a moment to admire the planters and enjoy the blossoming displays as they travel through this historic town. A volunteer group called the Platform Planters has been set up to maintain the plants throughout the year.
